Meditation on “Bande à part”

by Dean Kyte

/

about

Filming the painting “Salome ontvangt het hoofd van Johannes de Doper” (ca. 1640-5) by Rembrandt or one of his circle, a thoughtful pan from Salome’s gorgeous profile to John the Baptist’s withered head reminds Melbourne writer Dean Kyte of a shot in Godard’s “Bande à part” (1964)—a privileged moment which seems briefly to anticipate his own concept of flâneurial cinema.

lyrics

Il y a trois secondes dans “Bande à part” où le film s’arrête pour considérer “Le Serment des Horaces”.

C’est là le moment où le film se change en flâneur et la caméra devient us.

(There’s three seconds in “Bande à part” when the film stops to consider Le “Serment des Horaces”.

It’s then that cinema becomes flâneurial—and the camera becomes us.)
