lyrics

It was getting light over Docklands when I gave up the vigil. The first stirrings of traffic,—citybound folk nursing the tailends of their dreams on the 58 tram, and westbound folk fleeing the nightmare of the city after swingwatch,—threaded the occasional pair of dull yellow beads onto the glittering gutter of the tramtrack.

Williams had gone to bed and he had evidently gone alone. No light had shown in eight hours and no latenight callers had rumpus’dup the fitful slumber of the street. Sacha, watching the mews behind the house, broke post to lope up. With a yawn and a weary shake of his head, he let me know from a distance that our bird was still in the coop. With a jerk of my head, I dismissed him.

I lingered, dissatisfied. Ought I to go over there and stir things up?

A West Coburg tram lumbered towards me slowly over the brow of the hill, blinking in the dawn, its lights blinding. I followed it with bleary fascination as I meditated on whether Williams would keep if I paid a quick call to Carlton to shake things up over there. But I didn’t like the fact that there had been no movement in the house. Had the scare I had thrown into Farr been enough to let Williams know I was onto him? I didn’t see the Toyota the tram was towing along the fairway until it was too late. The driver pulled out from behind to flank me.
